In my opinion, Trilliums are the stars of the spring woodland garden. Even though I have had different varieties in my garden for years, I continue to anxiously await their arrival each spring, and I continue to be amazed at their quiet beauty. It's always almost as if seeing them for the very first time.
Trillium grandiflorum, a North American native, is easily recognized by its flowers petals and deeply lobed leaves in groups of three. Even the berry has three cells - "tri-llium," get it? Growing from 10-15 inches tall in shade, Trillium grandiflorum complements other spring blooming flowers, like Helleborus, Virginia Bluebells, Epimediums, and spring blooming bulbs, too. Trillium grandiflorum will thrive in alkaline soil. Shade. Zones 4-8. Quarts.
