Spigelia marilandica, a perennial native, found in rich, moist woods from Ohio, south to Florida, and west all the way to Texas, is just as suited for the garden, and why shouldn't it be? Nothing shines in a garden like the color red, and these trumpet-shaped scarlet flowers, with contrasting bright yellow centers, shine in abundance. Spigelia grows in sun/ partial shade (preferred), from one to two feet tall, with blooming in late spring/early summer. If spent blooms are removed, the blooming period can be extended. The roots have a pink juice that is used for coloring and gives this plant its common names. Zones 6-9.
