Polygonatum odoratum "Variegatum" is one of those plants that I really look forward to every spring in my woodland garden. This variegated Solomon's Seal manages to persevere every winter's numerous blankets of snow and, just like clockwork, push its way through just about any ground cover or colony of bulbs to unfurl and delight. I think that it is at its best in a woodland setting - a few there and a few there, tucked under trees, around rocks, and amid other woodland plants where it complements them to a tee - rather than mass planted in downtown bank and office gardens. Somehow, it just doesn't have the same effect there and seems out of place. In my opinion, it's just too beautiful to be toyed with, and if this plant could talk, I think it would agree. This variegated Solomon's Seal grows to about two feet and has beautiful green leaves edged in ivory, followed by white bells that dangle from the stems like earrings. And, while the bells do not jangle as they dangle, they are very fragrant, and that's almost as good. And, if that isn't enough, variegated Solomon's Seal is also deer resistant, which is an important consideration for many of us. Put this plant where it belongs - in a woodland setting and in light shade - and enjoy it in Zones 4-8.
