Mitchella repens is a lovely native evergreen creeper that makes a highly desirable groundcover. Everything about it is attractive: the ornamental leaves that appear in pairs; the dainty white, tubular flowers that appear in pairs; and the scarlet berries that follow, also in pairs. That answers how one of its common names, "Twinberry," came to be. The berries are supposedly enjoyed by birds, particularly partridges, and mammals, hence the common name "Partridgeberry." Indian women drank a tea made from the leaves as an aid to childbirth. This native creeper grows to about two inches high in full or part shade in Zones 3-8. Quarts.
