Jeffersonia diphylla, named in honor of Thomas Jefferson by botanist, William Bartram, is native to the damp, alkaline woodlands of Southern Ontario south to Virginia, and west to Iowa and on the endangered list in some states. The solitary, one-inch white flowers resemble those of Bloodroot and, although short lived, are followed by a pear-shaped fruit. The leaves are somewhat more interesting - each a lovely shade of green, parted lengthwise into what is often referred to as "fairy wings." In the right conditions, Jeffersonia diphylla makes a lovely groundcover in an open woodland setting and rarely reaches more than 12 inches. The only other species of Jeffersonia is Jeffersonia dubia, and that is found in Japan. Zones 4-8b, Part to full shade. Quarts.
