Hepatica americana is an early spring native wildflower. Small pink, lavender, or white flowers emerge in March from the leathery leaves of the previous year's growth, with new leaves arriving later. A common name, "Liver Leaf," refers to the shape of the leaves, as well as the burgundy-brown color, and because of this, early herbalists believed the plant would be effective in treating liver ailments. This native wildflower is best when naturalized in a woodland or native flower garden, but a shady spot in a rock garden will also work. Hepatica works best in consistently moist soil and part shade in Zones 3-8. Quarts. (Photo courtesy of Jim Stasz @ USDA-NRCS PLANTS Database)
