Gillenia trifoliata, or Bowman's Root, got its name from the fact that the powdered, dried root was once used by Indians as a laxative and emetic. Since the native habitat of Bowman's Root is the rich woods, be sure to give it a place with most soil and shade or part shade. Once established, Bowman's Root is easy to please and is drought tolerant. Bowman's Root grows from two to three feet high with white or pinkish flowers and narrow leaves in Zones 4-8.
