Catananche, or Cupid's Dart, grows on slender stems above gray-green, grasslike foliage, and its fine white flowers are ideal for cutting. (This photo was taken near Japanese Anemones and does not represent the narrow foliage of Catananche). The buds are strawflower-like and may be startling, as they seem more like seed pods, but before you know what hit you, one of these lovely white flowers with violet centers appears. Interesting to know: Catananche was once used by the Greeks as a love potion; its Latin name, "Katanangke," means "strong incentive." Zones 4-9.
