Welcome to Gardens in the Wood of Grassy Creek, a small nursery in the mountains of North Carolina. Specializing in the natural beauty of native and species perennials, Gardens in the Wood also carries other flowering perennials, a few choice herbs, and an occasional annual. Most will not be found at your local nursery or big box store. Propagation goes on all year long, and additional plants and new varieties are added frequently, so be sure to check this site often. Also, please visit my Garden Blog for my thoughts and discoveries about gardening and my walks with Daisy.
If you would like to SUBSCRIBE to emailings about new plants offered, sales, or other news and special offerings, please do. We promise not to bother you too often, and you may unsubscribe at any time.
Gift Certificates are now available for your favorite gardener and may be purchased in any amount.
Plants are organized by botanical name, but common names can be found quickly in the Plant Search. Why? Because many plants have the same, or similar, common names, it's a good idea to know the botanical name. That way you know exactly what you're looking for - no doubt about it.
Guarantee: Gardens in the Wood guarantees that its plants will be healthy, properly named to the best of our knowledge, and ready to grow in your garden when shipped. If you receive a plant in questionable condition, please notify us immediately. If your plants have been damaged in transit, please let us know immediately and, if necessary, they will be replaced or the purchase price will be refunded. We are not responsible for plants that are delayed due to insufficient or incorrect addresses given to us by a customer. Gardens in the Wood has no control over the weather or growing conditions in your area and is not responsible for plants beyond 5 days of their arrival.
Shipping. Unfortunately, Gardens in the Wood cannot offer free shipping, but your plants will be shipped in the most affordable and expeditious method available. Because many USPS distribution centers are closing across the country, most plants are now being shipped by UPS, so be sure to give a physical address when ordering.
Due to agricultural restrictions, Gardens in the Wood does not ship to Arizona, California, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, Oregon, and Washington at this time.
Shipping Dates: Gardens in the Wood ships according to the USDA zones and the weather conditions here in Grassy Creek. In general, shipping does not begin until late March - earlier if we do not have freezing weather when plants leave here - but later if we do. When an order is placed, you will be given an indication of when shipment will take place; please do not ask to have plants sent at times that are inappropriate for your growing area and/or impossible for ours. Plants at Grassy Creek are not kept in a greenhouse; they are kept outside under a crop cover, and as much depends on the weather here as it does the weather in your area.
Sizes. The majority of plants are in quart-sized pots, although a few plants might be in smaller, four-inch pots or in larger, "cheater" gallon (3 quarts) pots. Occasionally, some plants will be sent bare root.
Ordering by Mail: If you feel uncomfortable ordering online, you may order by mail. Just jot down what you want on a piece of paper with your name, address, phone number, email address, and any other instructions you might have and mail it to the address at the bottom of the page with a check or money order.
Visiting: If you live in the area or are planning to be in the area, you are welcome to purchase and/or pick up plants here and save on shipping costs. Just be sure to phone ahead for directions.
